Abstract
From 2010 to 2019, there were 112,230 deaths by suicide in Brazil. It is common that when there is a suicide attempt, due to injuries, the person is taken to a hospital. Therefore, taking this into account, there is a high probability that nursing professionals will be faced with a request for a suicide attempt. The objective of the article is to know the perception of nursing professionals regarding hospital urgency/emergency care for suicide attempts. The present research is qualitative and exploratory, which used semi-structured interviews carried out synchronously or asynchronously with nursing professionals. Four professionals participated in the research. Participants were 2 women interviewed asynchronously and 2 men interviewed synchronously. Some challenges were found in the interviews, such as: pejorative comments that some nurses (colleagues of the interviewees) have, difficulties with the medical team in handling and referrals, subjective difficulties such as not thinking that they have the profile to meet such a demand, work overload issues and lack of other professionals to guide and help, such as the psychologist. It is important to understand that suicide is a complex issue and that we cannot simply blame these professionals, who do their best with the possibilities they have.
