The city as a circuit of power and inequalities

Even after 30 years of the 1988 Constitution, and a wide range of institutionalized urban policies since then, the same urban problems are verified, especially since the great difference between the “official” city and the periphery. This paper intends to present how the different social inequalities are unevenly distributed across the urban space of Brazilian cities, generating great scenarios of socio-spatial segregation, and also the way in which this impacts on the intergenerational capacity for social ascension and the maintenance of power of some interested groups interested in earn income from urban land. To this end, the objectives will be achieved from an extensive bibliographic review on the issue, corroborated with official documents, empirical studies and reports, creating an interdisciplinary aspect necessary to understand the urban issue.
